Mission & Outreach

The heart of Parkway heights can be found in the heart its members have to serve others. From local mission projects to foreign trips, the members of Parkway Heights define themselves as people in mission, seeking to Make Disciples wherever God calls them. If you would like to be a part of any project or trip, please contact the church office.

Local Opportunities

Edwards Street is a community center located in southeast Hattiesburg. It offers childcare, tutoring and adult education opportunities. In 2003, Edwards Street also opened a food pantry to meet the needs of the local residents. Many of Parkway Heights Members provide leadership for this mission and many more volunteer to tutor children or provide assistance with building maintenance and repair.

Breadbasket is a ministry of Interfaith Volunteers of Hattiesburg, Inc.; It is a non-profit organization comprised of 11 local churches (Parkway Heights is one) which meets the emergency food needs of people in our area. Volunteers take phone calls from local families in need, pick up food from the pantry and deliver it to the family.

Faith in Action is an interfaith group that works to provide basic services for elderly and handicapped adults. Volunteers work to build relationships and trust with those they work with.

Missions - World & National

Missionary Support - Parkway Heights supports six missionaries through the General Board of Global Ministries as well as Hope School, a Palestinian School outside of Bethlehem, Israel. The financial support for these missionaries comes for our communion offerings each month. For more information on the General Board and its missionaries, go to: www.gbgm-umc.org.

Mission Teams to the 4-Corners Navajo Reservation - Parkway Heights sends two teams each year to the Navajo Reservation in the 4-Corners area. The Navajo VBS Team plans and leads Vacation Bible School for a Navajo United Methodist Church. The Navajo Construction Team builds churches and additions to Navajo United Methodist churches.

The Medical/Dental Mission to Honduras offers people with a heart for missions an opportunity to serve in a foreign country. Volunteers help in various clinics, children's work, kitchen, construction, etc. Church members who can not or don't want to travel outside the country are able to participate locally by packing medical supplies, clothing and other items to be shipped to the mission site.

Heifer Project International is an annual outreach of our church. Heifer Project (www.heifer.org) provides stock animals (cows, chickens, rabbits, etc.) for impoverished families around the world. Our giving helps fight hunger around the world.

The Samaritan's Purse Project provides children and teenagers around the world with supplies, such as toiletry articles, school supplies, crayons, coloring books, etc., for children and teenagers in third world countries.

The Annual Missions Auction, held every November, raises money to fund our mission projects. Items in the auction range from yard tools to artwork to vacations!
